Once primarily a consumer
concern, businesses now face the threat of corporate
phishing. A recent
IDG News Service article reported that in August
2006, the Anti-Phishing Group counted 19,000
phishing URLs. By October, the number had nearly
doubled to 35,000. Phishing attacks have increased
not only in volume but also in sophistication with
criminal organizations emerging solely committed to
developing new attack techniques.
The word “phishing” comes from the analogy that
Internet scammers are using e-mail lures to
fish for passwords and financial data from
the sea of Internet users. The term was
coined in 1996 by hackers who were stealing AOL
Internet accounts by scamming passwords from
unsuspecting AOL users. Since hackers have a
tendency to replace "f" with "ph" the term phishing
was derived.
